Description
The Certified Online Instructor (COI) offering certifies those who have achieved measurable knowledge related to online course development, management, and facilitation of an online course. Blackboard is used as the learning management system and is taught completely online, i.e. no campus visits are required.
The four courses must be taken in order:
- Online Course Development
- Managing an Online Classroom
- Online Course Facilitation
- Capstone Project
Benefits of the Program
Many instructors teaching online courses have little to no experience or formal training in online instruction. Those who complete the certification offering understand the capabilities of current technologies for online teaching and learning. Additionally, participants are able to design relevant, engaging, and interesting online courses.
COI offering is delivered entirely online, and is instructor-led. Your progress through the curriculum is guided by a qualify professional. All courses are 4 weeks long with 12 hours-per-week time commitment.
Courses are pass/fail. The four courses must be taken in the order shown below ; the Capstone Project cannot be taken until the other three have been completed.
Courses included in this offering are:
1: Online Course Development
Introduces students to creating online courses using a development and delivery tool. This course is designed to give its participants knowledge of and basic skill in the design and development of online courses as well as in the practical use of associated online systems, such as Blackboard.
2: Managing an Online Classroom
Introduces students to best practices and techniques for successfully managing online courses. In this course, students learn about developing detailed course documents, including the syllabus and rubrics, as the first step in managing expectations for online students. Learn best-practice techniques for online classroom communication, lesson presentation, and how to deal with open entry/open exit in the online classroom.
3: Online Course Facilitation
Introduces students to best practice for teaching/facilitating online courses, and gives them the opportunity to implement those best practices in their own online courses. Students will be able to teach online following validated instructional practices and standards.
4: Certified Online Instructor Capstone *
Capstone participants will design, develop and teach an online course that demonstrates the application of best practices, as well as participate in the role of an online student as part of the written peer review process. After completing this course, students will be able to create course components and teach online following validated instructional practices and standards.
*A design and development team for certification recommendation reviews capstone projects.
Who can Attend?
The Certified Online Instructor offering is designed for anyone interested in teaching online, or who wants to take a leadership role in online learning at their institution. Teachers, administrators, and educational staff members will benefit greatly from participation in the COI program.

Each of the four courses is an average of 48 hours. Duration per course is 4 weeks.
Workload
This is an intensive course requiring about 12 hours a week. The time commitment will vary depending the individual's input, needs, and personal study habits. The time is spent reading online and/or print materials, communicating with the instructor and other participants via course forums, and completing assignments/projects.
